Everybody with a dislocation of or damage to the vertebrae or their cartilages in the lower part of the back or the pelvis can expect to experience sciatica pain at least for a part of his live.

There are two main reasons for damage or dislocation of these vertebrae and/or cartilages.
One reason is injury by accidents - especially among young people we frequently see damage to the vertebral column by traffic or sports related accidents.

The second reason is age. The vertebral column is one of the most challenged parts of our body. We hardly will make a single movement in our whole life in which the spine would not be implicated in one way or another: it supports our head, our arms, our pelvis and our torso. It is slowly worn down through our lifetime and beyond a certain age vertebral damage can be considered as normal.

The third reason is an unhealthy lifestyle with either not enough exercise or with too much of the wrong exercise.
Three groups of people are the main victims of vertebral damage due to unhealthy lifestyle.

One group spends too much time in a sitting position with not enough exercise to the abdominal muscles. These muscles help the vertebral column in its daily work. When they get to weak, the vertebrae and their cartilages experience friction beyond their capacity and start wearing down before time.

The second group is people who overstrain their vertebral column - nurses, porters, and athletes i.e. who suddenly have to lift heavy loads but use the wrong techniques in such moves.

The third group is people with mental problems who for various reasons can lose the ability to relax deep and long enough. The lack of relaxation in the muscle tonus sooner or later can and will also affect the vertebral column.
